Search engine optimization is part poetry, part usability, part science--then throw in some creativity, marketing, intuition, and a heaping helping of organization. It’s knowing what users want, understanding design patterns and architecture, analyzing detailed reports. It's the confluence of engineering and marketing, writing and architecture.
It’s about harmonizing the function of content, keywords and navigation simultaneously. My process is not unique. But my ability to weave it all together will give you a site that works in more ways than one.
Determine the appropriate keywords and phrases
It won't do you much good to bring searchers to your site if they're not looking for what you offer. Make sure you attract the right prospects by selecting appropriate phrases. You also want to select phrases for which you have a good chance of ranking highly. Fewer qualified visitors who want what you have is far better than oodles of people who have no interest in your product or services.
Optimize your site a page at a time
Yes, the home page is vitally important--but don't stop there. Select a few phrases for each important page on your site and write good tags for them (this is where the creative part comes to play!). The description tag is important because searchers will often see this content on the search results page. Make it compelling and persuasive. The browser title is also key.
Suggest improvements to your site content
You want pages with clear and appropriate use of your key words and phrases while still having compelling web content that makes sense to visitors so they take the action you want them to take, be it sign up for a newsletter, fill out a lead form, or buy something online.
Here's that mix of art and science again. The writing has to make sense to user, first and foremost, but with a bit of attention, tweaks can be made to help out your organic search engine rankings as well.
